Textual Analysis

Missy Elliot - She's a bitch

Missy Elliot - She's a Bitch
Uploaded by welcomeback. - Explore more music videos.

This song by Missy Elliot is a performance based video which consists of no males. At the start of the video we get a very sinister vibe from the artist, however the beat is very hip hop which is conventional. The dull/dark colour scheme used challenges the generic codes for the video.

At the start of the video we see Missy Elliot wearing a black costume which to some extent challenges the female conventional code as they do not wear this type of costume/clothing. This type of clothing is wore by male and is clearly identified through mise-en-scene. Here we can already see that there is some intertextuality referencing to the movie blade. The main character in the movie is Blade. His role in the movie is of a brave heroic vampire slayer, this role would not be suitable for a women to play, as heroes are mostly men, who are brave and strong. Here pepresentation of gender is immedtiately noticed as this is not expected. Looking at her costumes we can see the similiarity with the movie Blade. This particular video challenges the idea of feminism and post feminist views. From the video, we can see that Missy Elliot doesn't care what people think of her as she has her own style, She embraces that she is different and enjoys it.
Blade the character was was half vampire and human, the intertextuality referencing is very interesting, however there may be some post feminist views as she is in control of what she doing. She is not doing it to please oyher, she is saying this is who i am. Missy Elliot seems to reject conventional representation of women free from objectification. Furthermore, the video sticks to the typical feature of a female hip hop artist video. We see a high angle shot on her for quite long, and this could be representing how the industry looks down on her and how she challenges the standard of getting recognition in the music industry. After we see a low angle shot of her walking which could represent that she is determined towards something with her new image. This particular video is seen to be one of the most expensive videos of all time. Missy Elliot puts her messages across that she isn't a normal/average artist, her style in this specific video counters feminism. As the vidoe goes on we see her in a car, which yet again, goes against conventions of a female hip hop video, She doesn't conform to stereotypes of gender representation.
However, we see some female dancers in the video, which is a common convention of a hip hop video but Missy Elliot doesn't wear provocative clothing like them. Instead, she wears mens clothing which is another unconventional feature by her, this makes her different.

In conclusion, approach to music has allowed her to have an image of her own, one which has worked succesfully. However, there is still a post feminist vibe to the video but Missy Elliot has done it in her own unique way. Furthermore, the video is not completely post feminist as she doesn't go for a sexy female approach like the other females. By doing this, Missy Elliot has given a differnet impression of typical female artist in the Hip Hop genre. She has made her own unique and different image whilst enjoying and being herself. She opposes feminsit views strongly as has acted like a male in this particular video.

CD cover analysis

CD covers:

They are used to show the insight into artist and in detail. It also establishes the artists identity, including personality, visual representation of the music. It is very eye-catching and specifically designed that way to attract audiences, audiences line of appeal, one line is called envy and the other one is called aspiration.

Cover analysis:

Main image of artist - Mainly soul artists are black and are represnted as natural. This is evident throught the use of the twigs and her natural hair. The image suggests she is humble, as she is looking up, gentle, and maybe thanking God?
She looks reflective/peaceful. From her body language and the way she has positioned her hands suggests diva like behaviour. She is also subverting the direct gaze pose.

Composition and layout - the main image is a close-up which suggests her high status as an artist/song writer. Central framed, implies that everything is hers including the song, music, its all original. Also the layout is quite simple and plain.

Appearance - Make-up is very natural and simple. She is wearing no jewellery, which suggests she is grounded, and shows humbleness. Also natural beauty is shown as opposed to sexy. The colour Mahogamy blends in with her natural afro.

Typography - The typography is simple and sophisticated. The font colour is cream and is formal which reoresents soul music.

Colours - The colour mainly used is mahogany, and other complementary colours used are cream and the twigs. The colours used suggests that the artist is humble and down to earth.

In conclusion, the CD cover suggests that the artist takes her music very seriously and wants people to love it and respect her and her music.

History of music

Thriller:

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a piece of music. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. The first ever video was Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles. Although music videos were a new development, a lot of controversies surrounded music videos as many thought it was a new era for pop music, however some believed it took away the importance of the artists voice and forces you to concentrate on their looks and the actual image.
Thriller by Michael jackson was a 14 minute music video released in 1983 and was voted most influential music video of all time. Also his album Thriller is considered to be the best-selling album of all time. Thriller included a lot of intertextual references to horror films and used a lot of homage and pastiche elements of other films and combinding it with his music and dancing to create a feature film music video. His music videos were seen as a revolution for all music videos.

Research

I have spent a lot of time researching into the music idustry and various channels that broadcast music video and I have come to the conclusion that these few channels would be the best for streaming my music video.

Box
Interactive chart music channel. Includes track selection, playlist and charts. The Box lets you check out the UK's hottest new talent.

MTV
Formed in July 1999, MTV Networks Music is the world’s leading online music entertainment company, with 22 worldwide music destinations on the Web. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs.

Kerrang
Kerrang! magazine was published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United Kingdom. The magazine's name is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound made when playing a power chord on an electric guitar. Kerrang! commenced publication on 7 June 1981.

Storyboard

Our main idea is that our performer is having a bad day where everything is going wrong just like the lyrics state and then she see's her boyfriend and things instantly start to perk up for her life. At the end however she decides to ditch her boyfriend and have a night out partying with her girls.

Our main perfomer will be Noor in year 12, as she has the right image and her style is quite quirky and fun. Jack will be playing her boyfriend and we have also decided to have a guitarist in the video, Kurt, a friend from outside school will be playing that role. He has agreed to participate in the production.

Stereotypes In Music - Gender

- Men are mostly dominant, aggressive and can be represented as independent, adventurous, unemotional and competent.
- Stereotypical gendered occupations such as males as firefighters/mechanics and women as cheerleaders/ waitresses
Examples of males are: 50 Cent - Candy Shop this video shows 50 Cent as him getting any kind of girl he wants and showing the women being used a sexual target, this suggests they are submissive and powerless.
- Women engaged in more sexual and passive behaviour and more explicit. They are represented as objects of sexual advances or as sexual objects this shows the negatives of stereotypes in music as it portrays women as sexually provocative, objects that dance, pose and look good for the males.
Examples of women are: Destiny's Child - Cater To You this video shows the reliance on gender roles and shows that women are just housewives and will do anything the men want them to, the lyrics also suggest of pampering husband's or boyfriends.
Feminism 1960/70's - A movement that questioned the position within patriarchal society and the 'domestic bliss'
- Serves to challenge and eliminate oppression and dominate gender imagery
- Emphasised women in media such as women as sexual objects, domestics in the home, inferior to men or women as virgins, mothers or promiscuous
Sexual Objectification and the Male Gaze
- Laura Mulvey 1975 defined voyeurism as erotic pleasures gained from looking at a sexual object. She also showed the presence of women solely for the purpose of display and their display is passive and objectified for a male gaze regardless of viewers gender. The voyeuristic treatment of the female body in 'male' videos such as dancing in the background, looking good, wearing tiny or little clothes boosting male ego's. Women connote to be looked and object of the 'male gaze'
Stereotypically 'Female' Occupations
- There are many music videos that emphasis the stereotypes of women occupations and an example of that is Britney Spears. She adheres to traditional gender stereotypes by taking on the roles of as sectary, air hostess and a waitress; each occupation emphasises highly sexualised costume and behaviours. Pink also shows this in the video U and Your Hand showing Pink as a boxer, mechanic, and sitting on the bed, balcony and in a park showing herself as a 'male gaze' but also showing her subverting to the stereotypes of women showing her working out in the gym and being a mechanic.
Post Feminism and the female gaze 1980's
- Re appraisal of feminist vales
- Does not strive for equality as this assumes men as better but they wish to surpass male achievements
- Objected to the theories which position them as objects of the 'male gaze' and identifies the 'female gaze' - women desiring men
- Women began to assert their right to dress and be sexually attractive

Diva Eve - Song Lyrics

Chorus: THIS IS THE SONG TO SING ALONG WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG

It's the day that I get up too late
got a meeting at half nine
there are no clean socks
and the milk's run out
all is going to be fine

I miss the bus and the tube is stuck
there is nothing I can do but fail
if I had a hammer I would slam my thumb
but I don't so I break a nail
I forgot my keys and I lost my glove
and I left my card at home
I can't find a thing, I can hear it ring
but where is my phone?

when the trousers rip and the wrong things slip
out to where they don't belong
i clearly got my knickers in a twist
did I have to wear a thong?

I refuse to get upset
this is the sountrack in my head
I am the hero of my own big movie
Maybe a looser and flop
lets loose the bad mood and do pop
where is my party hat, lets get silly

he computer crashed the printer died
this is such a perfect day
I'm glad I spent it with you
now get out off my way
I know there's worse
and I know I fine
so f off and let it be
I am cursing cause I like to swear
it's all positive yousee

Artist Research

We decided to look through unsigned.com for genres we felt that we can work with to create a effective music video. We chose 2 different genres to appeal to different audiences. One was a soula rtist called Solo and the other was a alternative pop artist called Diva Eve.

The songs we considered were Mi Latina by Solo and Wrong ( This is a song to sing along) by Diva Eve.
With solos style we thought that our target audience would be from 18- late 20's as it is a mature style where as Diva Eve has a youthful up tempo song that would appeal to the younger generation of 16-early 20's.

Lady Gaga - Paparazzi Analysis

Post-Modernism textual analysis:

Lady GaGa - Paparazzi / NEW
Uploaded by Dritingtofrenchus. - Watch more music videos, in HD!
The music video 'paparazzi' is directed by Jonas Akerlund and features Lady Gaga. The music video was officially released in July 2009. The music video is peformance and narrative based. The narrative is based around Lady Gaga’s relationship with her boyfriend.
The video consists of many post-modernist features such as Homage/pastiche, intertextuality, references to popular culture and binary divisions. The music video opens with close ups of flowers and then to a mansion in LA. The close up of flowers in the opening scenes represents clarity and innocence and this may be the image that Lady Gaga is trying to portray of herself at the start of the music video. There is also use of an unconventional feature of a Pop and Dance music video, as the video opens with a title sequence. This opening title sequence is a feature of classic Hollywood music videos and this might indicate to audiences that this music video contains a narrative. This is also an example of pastiche.
Then we see a mid shot of a flower with lady Gaga written next to it, this also shows that Lady Gaga may be trying to represent herself as innocent and naive. The next cut is to the main bedroom, where we witness Lady Gaga and her boyfriend making love. No music is being played which is unconventional of Pop and Dance music videos but it is expected in Post Modernist music videos as these videos focus more on style instead of content of the music video. Soon Lady Gaga and her boyfriend move to the balcony where he pushes her off. This shows us that the narrative of the music video is going to revolve around Lady Gaga and her boyfriend’s relationship.
Next there is a cut to the first scene where music is being played in. In this scene lady Gaga arrives in a limo in front of her house and here we finally see a conventional feature of Pop/Dance music video, which is back up dancers. This then leads on to the first piece of binary division in the music video, which is lady Gaga’s robot costume which makes her look half human and half machine.

Next scene is of lady gaga and her female back up dancers, here lady Gaga is displaying her dancing talents. Her costume again is very unusual which may indulge those who are into fashion, as to some she may be seen as a fashion icon. Her costume in the next scene is very interesting as she is wearing minie mouse costume and glasses, here she is making reference to famous culture and maybe stating her aims of becoming an icon like Minie mouse. This reference to popular culture is a stereotypical feature of postmodernist music videos.
Soon after, we see another Post modernist feature of this particular music video, which is blurring of fiction and reality. This takes place in the next scene where the audience are fooled to believe that Lady Gaga is getting arrested for murderering her boyfriend, this is fiction. The reality is shown in the next scene, where the media and press give her attention as she is a celebrity. The music video ends in a stereotypical Hollywood movie style, with the words 'The End'.
In conclusion this music video makes a lot of use of post modernist features which provide audiences pleasure, if understood. The blurring between fiction and reality may also provide some audiences a form of distraction from everyday life, as they are drawn into someone elses life. However, those who are not able to understand the use of homage and intertextuality in this video are left to enjoy the music, dancing and fashion costumes. Therefore this video interacts with a vast variety of audiences and is very popular.

Postmodernism

Hina, I'm happy to see that you have added the key features of postmodernist music videos. Please now upload your Paparazzi analysis.

Postmodernism

Post modernism was from the 1970's onward and was the breakdown between genres and style, and the distinction between the binary divides for example a human and a machine. It mixes up time and space in its narrative and emphasises style over content. It blurs fiction and reality and is becoming used more for a mediated version of reality.

- 1970s onwards
- The breakdown of barriers beween genre and style
- The breakdown of distinction between binary divides (E.g. human and machine)
- Mixing up time, space and narrative
- Emphasis of style over content
- Blurring of fiction and reality / representation and the real
- Becoming more use to a mediated version of reality, than reality itself

Key Terms

Key terminology:

- Homage-imitation from a respectful standpoint.

- Intertextuality - one media text referring to another.

- Bricolage - mixing up and using different genres and styles. e.g Shaun of the Dead: Zombie mixed with and romantc comedy.

- Pastiche - an artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work, artist or period. This is a self-conscious imitation.

- Pastiche/ Homage - Generic conventions of a "golden age" Hollywood film of which "gaga" is the leading lady

- Parody - mocking something in an original way.
Part of the idea of postmodernism is that there is no divide between high arts and mass culture.

Marxist

The Dominant Ideology -
The ideologiacl forces that determine how society functions. Marxists believe that all powerful institutions subtly control how we, the masses, conduct our lives within society.

The Media and Marxism -
The founder of Marxist theory was Karl Marx, who believed that the media and its messages could be used for good in the right hands. However, in the hands of what he called the dominant ideology the message could have a dangerously influential and controlling effects.
Marxists believe that the media plays a significant part in controlling the massesand some would say as an institution it is a greater influence on society than religon, politics and the family (nature over nurture). The supposed subtle dominance with which the media control the masses is also known as hegemonic control.

Hegemony -
Hegemony was an ideological concept first introduced by italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, who believed that the media message could perform a subtle indoctrination, influencing the manner in which society viewed the world until the message becomes 'common sense', unchallenged by the masses.

A Marxists annalysis on Goldies-Inner City Life video.
The video's narrative is about the pressures faced when living in the inner city. This is evidenced in th emusic video by the setting being london and some of the scenes being set in a club and in a council flat. The narrative also shows a single mother raising two kids in a council flat and dealing with ways to pay off the bills reinforcing the pressures of innercity life. There are high angled shots looking down on people displaying their vulnerability whilst it shows that the upper class are controlling the working classes.
Marxists would say this video demonstrates a small amount postive emssages of kids playing around sohwing a postive aspect on life however, it is mainly portaying negative messages as their is youths chucking trollies off roofs, people smoking in a club etc. This challenges the hegemonic control as usually people would vision living in the city to be a happy and postive life, with lots of money and little worries however the video shows the non realistic aspect of that. The target audience for this would be the masses and a niche young audience who are interested in listening to drum and base. It gratifies the audience as it challenges what most videos do and subverts the stereotypes of these type of videos.

Feminist and Post Feminist reading

* Post-Feminsm - Feminism has now been achieved. Women want to surpass men. Women are adopting "the female gaze" (Women purposely dress themselves erotically for men to stare at them.)

* Feminsm - Equal opportunities for women.

Pussycat Dolls - Buttons

The Pussycat Dolls - Buttons
Uploaded by The-Pussycat-Dolls. - See the latest featured music videos.
The music video of Buttons by Pussycat Dolls offers messages of sexual empowerment alongside assertive provocative and in control of 'the gaze'. The females are shown as confident, sassy, sexy icons challenging traditional assumptions about passive females sexuality "I'm a sexy mama". The group also uses a provacative male address challenging Snoop to "loosen up my buttons babe", however the pussycat dolls prove "too hot to handle" for Snoop Dogg.

Britney Spears - Toxic

Britney Spears - Toxic (Music Video)
Uploaded by EnvBritney. - Music videos, artist interviews, concerts and more.
Post Feminist -
They would say this is a good video. This is because it supports the views of post feminists. In Toxic by Britney Spears, she is in control. She is seen to be aggressive, by pulling the men and dragging them in toliets. This shows she is the dominate one instead of the man. This does not support the steorotypical image of how men are reprensented, usually men are in control and the more superior one. She also conveys female power (sexual empowerment). In the music video, Britney also subverts the subvervient role of an air hostess, i.e. Air hostess are supposed to be polite and do welcoming and appropriate. However, Britney is dressed more provacatively (Mini Skirt, clevage showing, rubbing the man's crotch area). Also the use of fire in the video could be seen as a visual metaphor that conveys her female sexuality/passion. Moreover, cameleon effect is empowering. Dominatrix dress code has been used throughtout the music video which makes it more appealing. She has a sparkling naked costume in one of the scenes, which contrasts with other scenes. She looks more vunerable in this clip, this maybe because she is showing a side of her which is a conventional female image.

Feminist Reading:
- Provacative - inappropriate for young audiences.
- "Chameleon effect": She has to use her image rather than her talent.
- There is strong media demand for Female pop stars to look as sexual as ever.
- This may reveal Britney's low self esteem (Bowing down to peer pressure) which in turn embaresses and demeans herself for money.
- Sex sells. The industry has won, Britney can't convey her own image and be individual.
- The Female Gaze: There are half naked men in the video. The video isn't just for men to stare at Britney.
- Confirms female styles.
- She has to use her image rather than her talent
- Capitalises on her sexuality to "cash in".

Generic Codes and Conventions

What is genre?
Genre is where things are group into caterogies which are determined by their characteristics.

What music genre do you know?
- Rap
- HipHop
- Garage
- Grime
- Pop
- Funky
- Bashment
- Gospel
- Indie
- Jazz
- Reggae
- Soul
- Rock
- K-Pop

What are Generic Codes and Conventions?
Generic Codes are predictable forms used to create a certain message or impression. For instance, In rap videos, jewellery is a code.

Conventions is the typical thing to do. This produces familiarity. For instance, Rap videos tend to be performance based which is the conventional style.

Why is genre important?
Genre is important because it defines the artists or the music and gives it an identity, it also helps meet audience needs and expectations.

What are the drawbacks of genre?
Over relevant stereotypes. For instance, someone who listens to rap would be stereotyped to be violent. By following the codes and conventions it makes music videos look standard and obvious.

Performance based music video:
A music video that is based around a performance of the artist/group.

Narrative based music video:
A music video that tells a story.

Concept based music video:
A music video that is based on a theme or idea, e.g Pharcyde - Drop.

Hybrid Genre, is a mixture of two or more genres, it can reach a much wider audiences. E.g Shaun of the Dead is a Horror and a Comedy so therefore it had the potential to reach the target audience of horror and the target audience of comedy.
