Stereotypes In Music - Gender

- Men are mostly dominant, aggressive and can be represented as independent, adventurous, unemotional and competent.
- Stereotypical gendered occupations such as males as firefighters/mechanics and women as cheerleaders/ waitresses
Examples of males are: 50 Cent - Candy Shop this video shows 50 Cent as him getting any kind of girl he wants and showing the women being used a sexual target, this suggests they are submissive and powerless.
- Women engaged in more sexual and passive behaviour and more explicit. They are represented as objects of sexual advances or as sexual objects this shows the negatives of stereotypes in music as it portrays women as sexually provocative, objects that dance, pose and look good for the males.
Examples of women are: Destiny's Child - Cater To You this video shows the reliance on gender roles and shows that women are just housewives and will do anything the men want them to, the lyrics also suggest of pampering husband's or boyfriends.
Feminism 1960/70's - A movement that questioned the position within patriarchal society and the 'domestic bliss'
- Serves to challenge and eliminate oppression and dominate gender imagery
- Emphasised women in media such as women as sexual objects, domestics in the home, inferior to men or women as virgins, mothers or promiscuous
Sexual Objectification and the Male Gaze
- Laura Mulvey 1975 defined voyeurism as erotic pleasures gained from looking at a sexual object. She also showed the presence of women solely for the purpose of display and their display is passive and objectified for a male gaze regardless of viewers gender. The voyeuristic treatment of the female body in 'male' videos such as dancing in the background, looking good, wearing tiny or little clothes boosting male ego's. Women connote to be looked and object of the 'male gaze'
Stereotypically 'Female' Occupations
- There are many music videos that emphasis the stereotypes of women occupations and an example of that is Britney Spears. She adheres to traditional gender stereotypes by taking on the roles of as sectary, air hostess and a waitress; each occupation emphasises highly sexualised costume and behaviours. Pink also shows this in the video U and Your Hand showing Pink as a boxer, mechanic, and sitting on the bed, balcony and in a park showing herself as a 'male gaze' but also showing her subverting to the stereotypes of women showing her working out in the gym and being a mechanic.
Post Feminism and the female gaze 1980's
- Re appraisal of feminist vales
- Does not strive for equality as this assumes men as better but they wish to surpass male achievements
- Objected to the theories which position them as objects of the 'male gaze' and identifies the 'female gaze' - women desiring men
- Women began to assert their right to dress and be sexually attractive

Diva Eve - Song Lyrics

Chorus: THIS IS THE SONG TO SING ALONG WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG

It's the day that I get up too late
got a meeting at half nine
there are no clean socks
and the milk's run out
all is going to be fine

I miss the bus and the tube is stuck
there is nothing I can do but fail
if I had a hammer I would slam my thumb
but I don't so I break a nail
I forgot my keys and I lost my glove
and I left my card at home
I can't find a thing, I can hear it ring
but where is my phone?

when the trousers rip and the wrong things slip
out to where they don't belong
i clearly got my knickers in a twist
did I have to wear a thong?

I refuse to get upset
this is the sountrack in my head
I am the hero of my own big movie
Maybe a looser and flop
lets loose the bad mood and do pop
where is my party hat, lets get silly

he computer crashed the printer died
this is such a perfect day
I'm glad I spent it with you
now get out off my way
I know there's worse
and I know I fine
so f off and let it be
I am cursing cause I like to swear
it's all positive yousee

Artist Research

We decided to look through unsigned.com for genres we felt that we can work with to create a effective music video. We chose 2 different genres to appeal to different audiences. One was a soula rtist called Solo and the other was a alternative pop artist called Diva Eve.

The songs we considered were Mi Latina by Solo and Wrong ( This is a song to sing along) by Diva Eve.
With solos style we thought that our target audience would be from 18- late 20's as it is a mature style where as Diva Eve has a youthful up tempo song that would appeal to the younger generation of 16-early 20's.

Feedback

Hina, you have provided 3 examples of textual analysis which demonstrate a good understanding of the ways in which messages and meanings are constructed. However, you must meet deadlines and ensure that you have a total of 5 analysis. In addition, you need to add planning work on your production so far and evidence of storyboarding.

Lady Gaga - Paparazzi Analysis

Post-Modernism textual analysis:

Lady GaGa - Paparazzi / NEW
Uploaded by Dritingtofrenchus. - Watch more music videos, in HD!
The music video 'paparazzi' is directed by Jonas Akerlund and features Lady Gaga. The music video was officially released in July 2009. The music video is peformance and narrative based. The narrative is based around Lady Gaga’s relationship with her boyfriend.
The video consists of many post-modernist features such as Homage/pastiche, intertextuality, references to popular culture and binary divisions. The music video opens with close ups of flowers and then to a mansion in LA. The close up of flowers in the opening scenes represents clarity and innocence and this may be the image that Lady Gaga is trying to portray of herself at the start of the music video. There is also use of an unconventional feature of a Pop and Dance music video, as the video opens with a title sequence. This opening title sequence is a feature of classic Hollywood music videos and this might indicate to audiences that this music video contains a narrative. This is also an example of pastiche.
Then we see a mid shot of a flower with lady Gaga written next to it, this also shows that Lady Gaga may be trying to represent herself as innocent and naive. The next cut is to the main bedroom, where we witness Lady Gaga and her boyfriend making love. No music is being played which is unconventional of Pop and Dance music videos but it is expected in Post Modernist music videos as these videos focus more on style instead of content of the music video. Soon Lady Gaga and her boyfriend move to the balcony where he pushes her off. This shows us that the narrative of the music video is going to revolve around Lady Gaga and her boyfriend’s relationship.
Next there is a cut to the first scene where music is being played in. In this scene lady Gaga arrives in a limo in front of her house and here we finally see a conventional feature of Pop/Dance music video, which is back up dancers. This then leads on to the first piece of binary division in the music video, which is lady Gaga’s robot costume which makes her look half human and half machine.

Next scene is of lady gaga and her female back up dancers, here lady Gaga is displaying her dancing talents. Her costume again is very unusual which may indulge those who are into fashion, as to some she may be seen as a fashion icon. Her costume in the next scene is very interesting as she is wearing minie mouse costume and glasses, here she is making reference to famous culture and maybe stating her aims of becoming an icon like Minie mouse. This reference to popular culture is a stereotypical feature of postmodernist music videos.
Soon after, we see another Post modernist feature of this particular music video, which is blurring of fiction and reality. This takes place in the next scene where the audience are fooled to believe that Lady Gaga is getting arrested for murderering her boyfriend, this is fiction. The reality is shown in the next scene, where the media and press give her attention as she is a celebrity. The music video ends in a stereotypical Hollywood movie style, with the words 'The End'.
In conclusion this music video makes a lot of use of post modernist features which provide audiences pleasure, if understood. The blurring between fiction and reality may also provide some audiences a form of distraction from everyday life, as they are drawn into someone elses life. However, those who are not able to understand the use of homage and intertextuality in this video are left to enjoy the music, dancing and fashion costumes. Therefore this video interacts with a vast variety of audiences and is very popular.

Postmodernism

Postmodernism

Post modernism was from the 1970's onward and was the breakdown between genres and style, and the distinction between the binary divides for example a human and a machine. It mixes up time and space in its narrative and emphasises style over content. It blurs fiction and reality and is becoming used more for a mediated version of reality.

- 1970s onwards
- The breakdown of barriers beween genre and style
- The breakdown of distinction between binary divides (E.g. human and machine)
- Mixing up time, space and narrative
- Emphasis of style over content
- Blurring of fiction and reality / representation and the real
- Becoming more use to a mediated version of reality, than reality itself
